Creating Offspring Manually
If you need to record a calf without going through the calving screen (e.g., the dam doesn’t have a breeding record), you can create the offspring manually.
How to Create Offspring Manually
- Navigate to any animal list and click Add Animal.
- Fill in the standard animal fields:
- Primary Identification — Ear tag or other ID.
- Animal Type — Select Calf.
- Sex — Select the sex.
- In the Calfhood section:
- Set the Birth Date.
- Set the Birth Weight.
- Assign the Dam.
- Assign the Sire (if known).
- Set the Conception Type (Natural or AI, if known).
- Click Save.
Differences from the Calving Screen
- Only the dam is prefilled (if you start from the dam’s record). Sire, owner, and conception type must be entered manually.
- No breeding record is updated. The offspring is created independently and is not linked to a breeding event.
When to Use Manual Creation
- No breeding record exists. The dam was not tracked through the breeding system.
- Purchased calves. Calves bought from another operation that need lineage recorded.
- Historical data entry. Recording past births for animals already on the operation.
