Weaning an Animal

Recording weaning on an animal captures the date and weight, marking it as weaned in the system.

How to Wean an Animal

  1. Open the animal’s record.
  2. Click Actions > Wean.
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Weaning Date — The date the animal was separated from its dam.
    • Weaning Weight — The weight of the animal at weaning.
  4. Click Save.

What Happens After Weaning

  • The animal’s record shows the weaning date and weaning weight.
  • The animal is now considered weaned in the system.
  • Smart groups that filter by weaning status will update accordingly.

Tips

  • Weigh on the day of weaning. Recording the actual weight on the day of separation gives the most accurate weaning weight.
  • Wean and weigh together. If you’re processing calves through a chute, record weaning and weight in the same session.
  • Compare weaning weights across calves. Reviewing weaning weights by sire or dam helps evaluate genetics and cow performance.
