Promoting and Demoting Animals

Promoting and demoting moves an animal to the next or previous production stage. This is used when young animals mature into adult classifications.

What Is Promotion?

Promotion moves an animal to the next production stage. For example:

  • Calf → Cow or Bull — A calf that has matured is promoted to cow or bull status.
  • Heifer → Cow — A heifer that has had her first calf is promoted to cow.

What Is Demotion?

Demotion moves an animal back to the previous production stage. This is less common but can be used to correct a mistake or reclassify an animal.

How to Promote or Demote

  1. Open the animal’s record.
  2. Click Actions.
  3. Select Promote or Demote.
  4. Confirm the action.

The animal’s type is updated to reflect the new production stage.

Tips

  • Promote heifers after first calving. It’s common practice to promote a heifer to a cow after she has her first calf.
  • Promote in bulk. If you have a group of calves aging up, use bulk actions to promote them all at once.
