Pedigree Overview

The Pedigree tab turns the sire and dam links you record on each animal into a complete picture of that animal’s family — who it came from, who it’s related to, and what it has produced. Instead of tracing lineage in your head or on paper, you get a multi-generation family tree plus a set of genetic and performance insights on one screen.

Where to Find It

Open any animal’s record and select the Pedigree tab (the branching sitemap icon, labelled “Ancestors and descendants”). The pedigree is calculated live from your herd data every time you open it, so it always reflects the sire and dam links currently on your animals.

What the Pedigree Tab Shows

The page is organized into insight cards at the top and family sections below:

• Inbreeding — a coefficient of inbreeding for the animal, with the shared ancestors that drive it. See Understanding the Inbreeding Coefficient.
• Progeny performance — offspring count, sex split, and average birth and weaning weights of this animal’s calves. See Progeny Performance.
• Breed composition — an estimated breed percentage built from the recorded ancestry. See Breed Composition.
• Ancestors — a family tree going back up to three generations (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents).
• Siblings — full, maternal-half, and paternal-half siblings from your herd.
• Descendants — a tree of offspring going forward up to three generations.
• Preview a mating — a planning tool that estimates the inbreeding of a hypothetical calf between this animal and a chosen mate.
• Download pedigree PDF — a printable pedigree certificate for the animal.

Where the Data Comes From

Everything on the Pedigree tab is derived from the Sire and Dam fields on your animal records. The more complete those links are across your herd, the deeper and more useful the pedigree becomes. If an animal has no sire or dam assigned, its ancestor tree will be empty until you add those links.

To build lineage, see Assigning Sire and Dam in the Animals knowledge base. For sires or dams that live outside your herd (AI sires, leased bulls), create them as Reference animals so they can appear in the tree.

A Premium Feature

The Pedigree tab is part of the Premium plan. On other plans the tab still appears, but it shows an upgrade card instead of the family tree and insights. See Accessing the Pedigree Tab.

Tips

• Assign sire and dam as animals are born. Lineage recorded up front makes the pedigree richer with no extra work later.
• Use Reference animals for outside genetics. They let AI sires and leased bulls show up in the tree and in breed composition.
• Click any animal in the tree to jump straight to its record.
