Marking Animals as Found

The check screen is the list of animals you are looking for. As you find each one, tap it off.

Two Taps per Animal

  1. Tap the row. It arms, and shows Tap again.
  2. Tap it again to confirm. The row is marked found and the progress bar moves.

The two-tap confirmation is deliberate — a phone in a gloved hand on a moving horse takes a lot of accidental taps. An armed row lapses on its own after a few seconds, so a row armed by mistake has forgotten about it by the time the phone comes back out of your pocket.

Only one row is ever armed at a time. Tapping a different row arms that one instead, so a mis-tap costs one more tap rather than an undo.

Undoing a Tap

Tap a found animal once to arm it — it shows Tap to undo — then tap again. The animal goes back to unaccounted-for.

If the To Find filter is showing, a found animal drops off the list on the tap that finds it. Switch to Found or All to get at it.

Reading a Row

  • The big label is the animal’s ear tag, falling back to its name, EID or freeze brand.
  • The meta line shows the dam when she is on this same roster (“out of 412”), plus type, sex and color.
  • A location pin names the pasture or group the animal was rostered from, on a check covering more than one.
  • An “Unexpected” badge marks a stray you added mid-check.
  • The arrow on the right opens that animal’s record. It is a separate button, so it never gets confused with a tap to find.

Filtering and Searching the Roster

Three filters sit above the list, each showing its own count:

  • To Find — what is still unaccounted for. This is where the screen starts, so the list shrinks as you work.
  • Found — what you have ticked off.
  • All — the whole roster.

Find a tag searches within the current filter — useful when you are standing in front of a cow and want her row without scrolling.

On a check covering more than one pasture or group, a strip of chips lets you narrow to one target at a time, each with its own found-of-total count — handy for a loop where some gates are worked and some aren’t. Strays you added mid-check stay visible under every target, since they came off no roster.

Ordering the Roster

The sort button beside the search box offers three orders:

  • Dam & calf (the default) — a calf is listed directly under its dam and indented, so a pair gets ticked off together instead of being hunted for separately. Nesting is capped at one level, so a granddam/dam/calf run reads as a flat pair-wise list rather than a staircase.
  • Identifier A–Z — a flat list in tag order. Tag 9 sorts before tag 10, not after tag 1.
  • Identifier Z–A — the same, reversed.

The identifier sorts flatten the dam/calf pairing — a strict tag order and a hierarchy can’t both hold — but the dam is still named on each calf’s meta line. Your choice is remembered on the device for your next check.

When Everything Has Been Found

Ticking off the last animal offers to finish the check for you, rather than making you find the Finish button. Decline it and the offer stays out of the way until something changes.

Read-Only Checks

A finished check opens read-only — the rows don’t respond to taps and Finish is gone. Reopen it from the Checks dashboard to make changes — see Reopening and Removing a Check. Users without write permission can view checks but not tap them off.

Tips

  • Stay on To Find. The list shrinking as you ride is the fastest way to know what is left; the count next to the filter tells you how many.
  • Use the search for a tag you can read but can’t find on the list. It is faster than scrolling a two-hundred-head roster.
