Adding an Animal That Isn’t on the List
Cattle drift. If you find an animal that isn’t on the roster — a cow that came through a gap from the next pasture, a calf that was never moved on paper — add it to the check rather than ignoring it.
How to Add One
- Scroll to the bottom of the roster and click Found one not on the list.
- Search by ear tag, name, EID or freeze brand. The box is focused for you, since you are usually standing in front of the animal.
- Tap the animal in the results.
It is added to the roster, immediately marked as found, and badged Unexpected.
What Gets Searched
The search runs against a list of your animals downloaded onto the device when the check opened — not against the server — so finding a stray works the same with or without signal.
- Animals already on this check are hidden from the results, so nothing can be added twice.
- If you see “Animal list hasn’t been downloaded yet”, the device has never had signal since the check opened. Reconnect once and it will be available offline from then on.
What “Unexpected” Means
The badge records that the animal was found somewhere it wasn’t expected to be. It is worth acting on:
- It usually means the animal’s pasture or group assignment is out of date — fix it on the animal record.
- It can mean a fence or gate needs looking at.
Unexpected animals count toward the check’s found total and carry the Unexpected flag into the CSV and PDF exports. They came off no roster, so they are excluded from the per-target counts and stay visible whichever target chip you are filtered to.
Adding While Offline
Adding a stray works with no signal. The row appears straight away and the write is queued; once you reconnect it is sent and takes on its real record. See Running a Check Without Signal.
Tips
- Add the stray, then move it later. The check is the record that it was there; fixing the pasture assignment is a separate job you can do from the house.
- You can’t add an animal to a finished check. Reopen it first.
