Creating an Action Task

An Action task schedules a bulk action to run later against a set of animals you select now. It’s useful when you already know which animals will need an action — like recording a sale or weaning calves — but the timing hasn’t arrived yet. Action tasks never run on their own; you always review and click Execute when you’re ready.

How to Create an Action Task

1. Select the animals the action will apply to — from a group, the animal list, or Animal Search.
2. Open Bulk Actions.
3. Choose the Create Action Task card (“Schedule one of these actions to run later against the selected animals”).
4. In the Create Action Task dialog, fill in:
   • Title — Required.
   • Description (optional).
   • Due Date — Required. The action becomes eligible to execute once this date arrives.
   • Priority — Low, Medium, or High.
   • Assigned To / Notify (optional) — Same as a Standard task.
   • Notify when due / Notify when completed.
5. Under “Select the action to perform when this task is due,” choose exactly one action and fill in its fields:
   • Wean Offspring — Weaning Date, Weaning Weight.
   • Record Death — Death Date, Cause of Death (optional).
   • Record Sale — Sale Date, Sale Price, Sale Weight, Buyer.
   • Promote Animals — Promote To Type, Sex, Breeding Status.
   • Demote Animals — Demote To Type, Sex.
   • Castrate Bulls — Castration Date (optional).
   • Delete Animals — No extra fields; selected animals are soft-deleted when the task executes.
   • Update Sire — Sire.
   • Update Dam — Dam.
6. Click Save.

What Happens Next

The animals you selected become the task’s target list, and the action and its fields are saved with the task. Nothing happens to those animals until someone reviews the task once it’s due and clicks Execute — see Completing and Executing Tasks.

To change the action type or the target animals on an existing Action task, delete it and create a new one — editing an Action task only lets you change details like the title, due date, priority, and notifications.

Tips

• Double-check your animal selection before saving. The target list is locked in once the task is created.
• Use Action tasks for known future work. For example, create a Wean Offspring action task the day you plan to wean, targeting the calves you already know you’ll wean, instead of remembering to select them later.
