Checks Overview
A check is a headcount you do on horseback, in the pickup, or on foot. Cattle360 gives you the list of animals that should be in a pasture or group, you tap each one as you find it, and when you finish, everything you didn’t see is recorded — so you know exactly what to go looking for.
Where to Find It
Open Production → Checks from the navigation menu.
Checks are available on every plan. Free accounts check by group; checking by pasture requires a paid plan, because Pastures itself is a paid feature.
How a Check Works
- Start a check against one or more pastures and groups. Cattle360 builds a roster of every active animal in them.
- Ride the pasture and tap each animal as you find it. Two taps per animal — one to arm the row, one to confirm — so a bounce in the saddle doesn’t tick off the wrong cow.
- Finish when you’re done. Everything still unaccounted for is recorded as not seen.
Nothing about the check needs a signal. The roster is downloaded when the check starts and every tap is saved on the device first, so the screen behaves the same in a dead spot as it does in the yard.
The Checks Dashboard
The Checks screen lists every check you have run, unfinished ones first so resuming is one tap away. Each card shows:
- The pasture or group it covers, and whether it is In Progress or Completed.
- The date it was started, or finished.
- How many of the roster were found, with a progress bar.
- How many were not seen, on a finished check.
- How many pastures and groups it covers, if it is more than one.
Across the top, three chips total your checks, your in-progress checks, and your completed ones.
What a Check Records
Every animal on the roster ends up in one of three states:
| State | Means |
|---|---|
| Found | You tapped it. The time is recorded. |
| To Find | Still unaccounted for. Only possible while the check is in progress. |
| Not seen | The check was finished without finding it. |
An animal you find that wasn’t on the list — a stray from the next pasture — can be added mid-check and is flagged Unexpected.
What Checks Feed Into
- The Last Seen column and filter on groups, reports and fieldsheets — “show me everything nobody has laid eyes on in 30 days”. See The Last Seen Column.
- The animal record — a Last seen stat, a Check History card, and a warning banner on an animal missed on consecutive checks.
Checks vs. Workings
They look similar and do different jobs:
- A check answers “is everything here?” It is a headcount. One tap per animal, no equipment, no data entry.
- A working answers “what did we do to each animal?” It is a processing session at the chute, with tasks, weights and an EID reader. See Workings Overview.
Tips
- Check the same ground on a routine. The Start screen shows how long it has been since each pasture or group was last checked, so it is easy to spot the one you have been neglecting.
- Finish the check even if you didn’t find everything. Finishing is the only thing that records what was missing — and you can reopen it later if the ride gets cut short.
