Creating a Working

Create a working to plan a chute-side processing session. Everything — the details, the animals, and the task list — is set up on a single Create Working screen.

How to Create a Working

  1. Open the Workings screen from the main navigation.
  2. Click + New Working (or Create your first working if you have none yet).
  3. Fill in the Details section:
    • Name — A descriptive name, e.g. “Spring Vaccination 2026” or “Weaning Day Processing.”
    • Date — The planned date for the working.
    • Location (optional) — Where the working takes place.
    • Note (optional) — Any extra detail about the session.
  4. Choose the animals in the Animals section. You can combine any of these sources:
    • By Group — Select one or more groups to include all of their animals. Smart groups are resolved to their matching animals at the moment the working is created.
    • By Pasture — Select pastures to include the animals currently assigned to them.
    • Individual Animal IDs — Type or paste specific IDs, one per line or comma-separated.
  5. Build the Tasks list (see Defining Tasks for a Working).
  6. Click Create Working.

How Animal Selection Works

  • The three sources are combined — an animal added from a group and also named individually is only included once.
  • Because smart groups are resolved at creation time, the working captures a fixed snapshot of animals. Adding an animal to that smart group later will not change an already-created working.

After Creation

The working is saved in Draft status and appears as a card on the Workings dashboard. Tapping the card opens the chute screen, where you begin processing. The status moves to In Progress automatically as soon as you work the first animal.

Tips

  • Plan ahead. Set the working up a day or two before the actual processing date so you can walk in and start scanning.
  • Lean on smart groups. If a smart group already describes the animals you need (e.g. “Calves born this spring”), selecting it pulls them all in automatically.
  • Set up your tasks now. Defining and scoping tasks before you reach the chute keeps the pen-side workflow fast.
