Processing Animals Through a Working

Processing happens on the chute screen — a large-button, touch-friendly workflow built for pen-side use. You bring up one animal at a time, then record or skip each of its tasks. This article is the full reference for that screen.

Opening the Chute

  1. Go to the Workings dashboard.
  2. Tap the working’s card — or tap Resume Active Working to jump back into the one you were last processing.
  3. The chute screen opens. The working’s status becomes In Progress as soon as you work the first animal.

Bringing Up an Animal

There are several ways to load the animal in front of you:

  • Scan its EID — With a Bluetooth EID reader connected (see Connecting an EID Reader and Scale), scanning a tag instantly pulls up the matching animal.
  • Search by ear tag — Type into the ear-tag search to find an animal by tag.
  • Find animal — Tap More → Find animal to search the working’s animals by tag, name, or EID and pick one.
  • Next in list — No EID reader? When the chute is empty, the big green button brings up the next animal in the working that still has tasks to do.
  • Prior — Step back to the previous animal in the working.
  • Recent animals — Quick shortcuts back to the last few animals you loaded.

If an EID Isn’t Recognized

If you scan a tag that isn’t on any animal in this working, the chute shows a prompt so you can search for the animal by ear tag and assign that EID to it on the spot. From then on, scanning that tag pulls the animal up directly.

Recording and Skipping Tasks

Each task for the current animal is a row with two buttons:

  • Record — Completes that one task. Tasks that need a value open a short prompt (weight entry, retag, treatment, note); simple tasks (brand, castration, de-horn) record with a single tap.
  • Skip — Marks that one task as skipped for this animal.

Once a task is recorded or skipped, the row shows a Completed or Skipped badge and its buttons disable.

Everything saves as you go. There’s nothing to “commit” at the end. If you’re out of signal, results wait on the device and sync on their own when the connection comes back (see Working Offline).

The Bottom Action Bar

The big green button in the middle is always your next move. Its label changes with what’s in the chute:

Button ShowsWhenWhat It Does
Record 3 and nextThe animal still has tasks to do (no EID reader connected)Records every remaining task in one sweep, prompting in turn for any that need a value (weight, retag, treatment, note), then brings up the next animal in the list.
Record 3The animal still has tasks to do (EID reader connected)Records every remaining task, then clears the chute ready for the next scan.
Next animal / Done, scan nextEvery task on the animal is recorded or skippedMoves on: brings up the next animal in the list, or clears the chute for the next scan if a reader is connected.
Next in listThe chute is empty and no reader is connectedBrings up the next animal in the working that still has tasks to do.
Waiting for scan…The chute is empty and a reader is connectedNothing to tap. Scan the next tag.

Beside it:

Skip rest (Skip on phones)Skip every remaining task on the current animal and move on.
MoreOpens Missed chute (skips the animal’s remaining tasks and sets it aside to revisit from history), Find animal, Working history, and Exit chute.
FinishOpen the session summary to review the session and finish the working. If anything is still waiting to sync, the button shows how many.

Use the per-row Record / Skip buttons when you want to handle tasks one at a time. Use the green button or Skip rest to get through an animal quickly. On a phone, Finish and the progress count sit in a thin line just above the buttons.

Per-Animal Tools

  • Details — Open the animal’s full record (pasture, age, last calving, and more) without leaving the chute.
  • + Add Task — Add a one-off task to just this animal (for example, an extra note or treatment that wasn’t in the plan).
  • Re-work — If an animal is already Done, reset its tasks to Pending so you can record them again.

Progress Tracking

Next to Finish, the chute shows how many animals are done out of the total, plus how many were missed. When every animal is Done or Missed, Cattle360 automatically opens the session summary so you can finish.

Day / Night Theme

The chute screen defaults to a dark theme that’s easy on the eyes in a barn. Use the sun/moon toggle in the menu to switch to a light theme; your choice is remembered on that device.

Tips

  • Scan for speed. A connected EID reader turns “find the animal” into a single beep.
  • Scope tasks ahead of time so non-applicable tasks auto-skip and never slow you down (see Defining Tasks for a Working).
  • You don’t have to go in order. Search or scan to jump to whichever animal is actually in the chute.
  • No signal? Keep working. The chute is fully offline-capable — see Working Offline.
